Péter Wolf, recipient of the Erkel Prize and the Artisjus Lifetime Achievement Award, is a composer whose style moves along the borders of classical music and jazz, while pop music is also no stranger to him. His first opera premiered in 2024 at the Óbudai Társaskör, directed by Kriszta Kováts, with a libretto by Péter Fábri.
The protagonist of the story is Lorenzo da Ponte, who would later become the librettist for Mozart and Salieri. Originally a priest, da Ponte eventually became one of the most renowned opera librettists in Vienna. However, due to a series of personal scandals, he was forced to flee to America. The story of a love triangle portrayed in the opera was discovered in his biography by the creators.
Set in 18th-century Venice during carnival season, this four-character drama revolves around the constant tension between Lorenzo and Francesca, fueled by the young woman’s jealousy. But what will come of Lorenzo’s unexpected encounter with Maddalena, a young Neapolitan woman fleeing a forced marriage?
The production features some of Hungary’s finest opera performers, with Erika Miklósa and Gergely Boncsér in the title roles, Viktória Mester as Francesca, and András Hábetler as the silent gondolier.
